Oil on belgian Linen, 24x30"
Another picture I've kept to myself for various reasons, the main one being that I was unsure people would get what I was going for. When I was sketching I thought the amount of white in the lower right would make the diagonal division too obvious. What I wanted to emphasize was the movement in that diagonal line, so I thought the idea of seeing the bird through a spotting scope would help achieve that while maintaining the unfinished look I love to explore. Originally the unfinished area was more random, but still roughly circular, however when I looked again I worried a buyer would think of cutting the piece to fit a circular frame which horrified me. So I put it away and when I came back to it I decided I liked it just how it was, so I kept it. One of the things I most like about the 'unfinished' look (pioneered by the great Ray Harris-Ching) is that it prevents the picture from looking like a photo.

I love the way the bird is looking back at the viewer-- very intriguing. The water reflections are also very well done! Beautiful painting. :)

Ha this is my favorite one. The circular motif floating within the piece is almost surreal. My first thought was not of a scope. (Thanks goodness there are no cross-hairs. lol I wouldn't have liked that at all.) I think most interesting of all is the suggestion of the rock formations into the less defined area but not the water. There is an interplay of light and dark/water and land that seems very elemental.

Thanks so much for enjoying this. I assure you the idea of a gun scope never entered my head, I don't get hunting at all. (besides given the composition the shot would've missed :))
The circular thing was one of the wonderful "happy accidents" that happen when painting. I was considering making it a circular picture so I drew the circle to see if it worked, but just then I stopped work on it for some reason. When I came back to it I immediately liked what was happening and continued with the effect I'd created (accidentally).
I love that you used the phrase "almost surreal". I've been trying for ages to achieve a kind of surrealism, so that was very welcome, thanks again!

I love this painting, especially the originality and composition. I find it so interesting and absorbing to look at. :)

That's genius! You hardly even need a frame besides to protect the edges, it look likes it's already framed with the scope-like look. It really accents the realism to have the less detailed outer ring. Love the rippling water

Thanks my friend! And you are right, in fact I still haven't framed it, still deciding where to put it. The thing I liked about the outer ring was that it prevents my least favourite 'praise': "Gee, it looks like a real picture"

Huh? I know people mean it as a compliment, but I'm not trying to make photos, I'm trying to produce something no camera ever saw.
The water has been a great friend to me because people think its incredibly hard to do, and if you tried to do it without photos to work from it would be! Here I had a shot I took of a creek and another of the moorhen. In the creek shot most of the rippling is caused by one of the rocks (where the bird is now) poking above the flowing water, to which I added more ripples from the bird, piece of cake!

Dont remember whether I answered your question, coz I think someone else asked the same thing :)
I do have a few at home most of the time, but generally they are in galleries to be sold which id the ultimate aim for all of them. I have this one with me as I was never really sure what to do with it, and I have the Peacock painting "Tronie" as I liked it and gallery owners didn't seem to (I should direct them to the page here with the DD & 2000 faves!). I also have the large picture of Purple Finches in an Apple tree as I gave it to my wife and wont sell it though I've had a few offers. At the moment I have more than usual (about 8 or so) as my gallery in New York City closed and I havent had time to look for new galleries. Makes my wife happy but I'd rather be selling them! Take Care!
