Regent Honeyeater study

Description

The Regent Honeyeater is one of Australia's most endangered species, though it was once fairly easy to find in Victoria and New South Wales woodland. Personally, despite many, many hours of looking I've yet to see or even hear one in the wild (I used reference photos taken at Melbourne zoo to draw this).

Troublingly, the fate of this elegant Yellow & Black bird is being shared by species which never would have been considered candidates for disappearance. The Jacky Winter is a smallish Grey Robin which was once common all over the country. It is in fact one of only two small birds I've touched in the wild. They commonly sat on the shoulders of bushwalkers watching for bugs and other interesting morsels kicked up by hikers. Now it has even gone extinct in some areas

Even more disturbingly, the experts are unclear as to the reasons for the decline of this woodland favourite, although it's disappearance appears to coincide with the appearance of new housing estates.

This study is for a painting idea, I'm working on and took a couple of hours with Black Prismacolour - (The only coloured pencil worth using!)
