Slavonian Grebe by wildartguy Slavonian Grebe by wildartguy
The Slavonian, or Horned Grebe for iBird, an iPhone/Pad app I'm the lead illustrator for. It's been more than two years now and I've done around 300 species from the US and UK - only 1000 or so to go. Incredibly I'm not sick of it, especially as I know that each bird I do will be seen by thousands of people (iBird is currently #2 in the App store). I want each image to be the best illustration of the species ever done, at least that's the idea, maybe by the time I do a thousand one will be, oh well, the thought keeps me interested

many thanks, the irony is that im in Australia so I can't use iBird for birdwatching, but were adding new illustrations every month, this month there will be American Kestrel, Gold crowned Kinglet, Northern Mockingbird, Bushtit, and White breasted Nuthatch. (If I get them all finished by Saturday that is!) shh! dont tell anyone!

Are this ibird artworks traditional art or digital? It's so smooth and fluid, almost too much so to be traditional. Though I've been surprised before! Love it! Makes me wish I had a device that used apps...

The iBird illustrations are all digital (photoshop) but Im an oil painter at heart so I guess it translates! btw, theres a PC version of iBird, I don't have it myself, I use an iPad I was given, so I'm not totally sure where to get it, I guess if you go to Whatbird.com it'll be there

That makes sense! I've seen that artists with traditional painting backgrounds do great with art in any medium (especially digital! You can get art so crisp!) I need to look that up, thank you!

Thank you Radiant! The birds are gorgeous, and water isn't as hard as people seem to think, but it always gets a great reaction, as I'm sure you know, you have some excellent work in your gallery, particularly the animal and portrait work, I love 'The Wolf' especially, great work!

Great to hear! Tell him to get the new free update, I'm going through the whole thing replacing all the images, each update will have a few more new illustrations. I wish I had photos as good as yours to work from! You have a great eye!

I told him and he told me it updates automatically, I can't wait until I get a phone that can use it, I love bird watching and usually have a Sibley guide in my car :)

My Sibley guide is next to me always even though there are no Loons or Vireos here in Australia, I use it as my first reference to check on females, juveniles etc for birds I don't know very well. We hope to do an Australian version one day, I too love birdwatching, I have 420 species of the 750 here, 780 worldwide, only 9,220 left! The publisher of ibird is now putting new pictures in each update and put my name on the UK version. There is a US version for Windows too, so any computer can run it, but not very handy in the field! Tell your dad we are releasing a new app called 'Journal' for making life lists etc, it links to iBird

Journal sounds awesome! My parents(they use some of my photos) have a life list here [link] and we try to include photo's and a few photos are great but most aren't that high of quality from cropping. It's also in need of updating, I have a folder of new photos but they haven't gotten around to including them yet. The journal sounds like it may be more convenient, can you include your own photos?

yeah, pretty sure you can include your own pics, and make different lists, export them etc. They may even be able to import the list they have on that page then add to it etc, I'm getting a beta copy soon and I'll know more, at the moment I'm designing the splash page for it.
